Orion, the son of Poseidon, was in love with Merope, the daughter of the king of Chios, and he raped Merope one day under the influence of wine.  This angered the king to ask the god of wine to punish Orion, who escaped to the island of Lemnos in the dark of the night.  Later, Orion also angered Gaea, mother of earth, and so she sent forth a scorpion to kill Orion, but as Orion fell to its poison, he also crushed the scorpion under him.
